Never in a million years did I think I would be married again especially at 61. It is wonderful and I highly recomend not giving up on a partnership after widowed or after a divorce and your heart broken in a million pieces. I lost David and Ezra 8 years ago and frankly have not really loved painting since unless I was sailing surrounded by blue waters, dolphins and it was wonderful. So here comes my last quarter and to new art.... promise to post more than every 3 years.

Robbin Robertson Polterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11707301214571302976noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817952574634830220.post-37408947325552141422016-02-18T18:18:00.000-08:002016-02-18T21:07:38.657-08:002015= loss+grief+art+ healing

Clearing out the dust of this blog I'll just return to 2015. Beautiful year with spring break spent with Ezra housesitting for friends overlooking Hull Bay, St Thomas Virgin Islands. We island hopped, snorkeled, played and had nice long conversations. It was a gift and magical memory I cherish. Ezra was headed to college, taking coding classes , started working at the Rowing Center and all was smooth sailing. I was slowly preparing for my solo show at HPBG central in Austin. The end of March Ezra was killed 2 miles from home in a one car accident. Construction was everywhere for miles on Mopac......flashing lights etc. My world went dark and heart cold. I immediatly quit my job and cancelled my art show months away with no intention of painting for a very long time. Our family was lifted by hundreds of loving friends, neighbors and family including the kids friends and parents....the tribe we raised our kids with. Days in shock lead to weeks and 6 weeks later while on a family weekend with all of Davids family and close friends David lead a hike up Enchanted Rock and thru his favorite cave on the top. He had a massive heart attack. He later died at the hospital. The life as I knew it and family I help create was gone . This is tragic to say the least and more pain than Mariel and I were equipped to recover from. The once noise filled house with teenagers in and out, activity, conversations and fun went silent. Painfully quiet. I was offered my show back and I accepted knowing that painting would be my salvation. For well meaning people that just "couldn't wait" to see what this nightmare inspired I'll gracefully share that tragedy for me did NOT inspire anything but pure survival any way that was going to be possible. Friends started sharing dreams of Ezra, lots of dreams actually and messages I needed to hear. From the dreams came images and one dream was Ezra riding "Chica" our 16 1/2 year old lab rescue that we put down days after Ezra's death. I knew they were together as they should be. I was lost, my dogs that slept with Ezra lost, his dad, his sister, his girlfriend all in shock...Davids family, friends, coworkers and it just went on and on. The painting filled my nights, my weekends and I am grateful for the ability to paint in the deepest darkest place I could go. The work was bright, happy and not much different from the art I had always painted. My show opening was packed with friends that had supported me and loved me giving me space and quiet I had asked for. It was their chance to love me and support me the best way they could. That night was magical, healing and I am grateful for the people in my life that have lifted our family up when their seemed no reason to get up. I am a lucky grateful woman, mother and art is healing me every day...

In October I had a fantastic reception to my show at Hyde Park Bar and Grill in Austin. I sold about 16 pieces during the show and I was more than honored. I had scaled down my shows from 2011 having 12 shows to 2 in 2012. It was all I could do to prepare over 45 pieces for Hyde Park for a one person exhibit ! Early December I hosted again the Annual Holiday Art Show and Gift Sale in my back yard patio. It is really a beautiful set up and about a dozen local artists that are simply amazing. I felt I had won the jackpot entering into my new job and 2 successful art shows back to back. I was offered to submit a piece or more to display at the Bass Visual Arts Gallery during the musical Lion King ! WoW my all time favorite and soul smiling show of all times. I wanted my piece to be over the top fantastic. I dreamed my piece and move the characters around a bit before I went to the drawing board. My enormous frame I never felt I would fill was wrestled out of the rafters of my studio by pure brute determination. Animal by animal I created "Abundance" 39x29" on board in a hand painted frame. The very delightful Emily invited me to also bring my 'Lucky Parrot" so one drizzly day I danced into Bass to deliver my inspirations. I really felt proud of this piece. At the same time I encourage talented Edie Kemp to create something of her own since her work is so African inspired and amazing. She created 2 tapestries about 6x3 feet of layers, beading and design that is masterfully mesmerizing. While I am sharing this piece I am dreaming up new pieces for September of this year....until then...enjoy.Robbin Robertson Polterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11707301214571302976noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817952574634830220.post-69788539942617227072012-11-15T07:20:00.000-08:002016-02-18T18:24:53.479-08:00
For years they were built for me by my husband, friends and web masters. I tried to design them they way I thought they should be built and then would mail photos, mail CD's of photos, word documents and hours of discussions of options and changes I wanted. Well over the years I had lists of domain names, passwords, hosting accounts, credit card charges and expired credit cards, lost websites etc. It was my pain in my ...... Well I decided I wanted to build my own sites my way in my time and make a mess and myself only to blame if they were dreadful ! With the help of webmaster Ziya Neema (artist extroinenair ) and mac iweb expert she helped me create my first few sites. Don't get me wrong it took hours of learning, mistakes, lost files and uploading to the universe and black hole before I felt confident. I love building sites now and my last one was : www.rebelcharter.comwww.rebelcharter.com . My own personal sites I have built are :
www.uniqueurn.comwww.uniqueurn.com and www.austinartcoop.com www.austinartcoop.com. I turned 50 in December and while too tired to celebrate appropriately I made some important decisions regarding 2012. I decided to strategically decide on shows and opportunities offered and so far it has been a carefully thought out space in time. I left Lightcrafters after 8 years. I learned so much and it was a difficult decision to depart working with great friends on cool projects however I really wanted to return to mental health. The universe answered and I am now a case manager with Caritas of Austin. With that said I had so much to learn so my art shows would be carefully chosen and limited with working full time. I am currently in a group show themed "Art in Music" displaying in the spirit of SXSW in town. This painting is " Playing by Ear" inspired by by self taught artist/musician great uncle Van. Unfortunately i did not have the mojo this year to jump into the first WEST Austin Studio tour but hope to join in next year and show off my home studio. My next showing will be in October at Hyde Park Bar and Grill (Central) so I am painting on the weekends and having a great time painting small intimate pieces in my small indoor studio space.

Donna, Ziya and I participated in the EAST show at Connie Green's Beer Garden located behind Joe's Place at MLK and Chicon. It was a beautiful show over 2 Saturdays. Ziya and I then exhibited at the Hyde Park Bar and Grill (Westgate) during December-the show was beautiful and well displayed. I wrapped up the holidays exhausted with my Annual Holiday Art Show and Gift Sale for 2 days only with over 15 artists on my backyard patio. It was a great run and promised myself never to schedule that kind of work during the holidays again !
I also turned 50 this December and made a 360 degree change to return to Mental Health and left my 8 years of Lightcrafters in Austin to work for Caritas of Austin. This was a big change and a perfect match for my interest in mental health. I will participate in only 2 shows this year including my own show in Oct 2012 at Hyde Park Bar and Grill Central. This is a nice goal 10 months out to paint around 30 pieces. Gonna be a great year !
We had discussed it for years painting her beautiful daughter as a mermaid. Everytime we saw each other we were mortified we had not began to process and so this year I contacted every person interested in a commission. When we got together and brainstormed we realized it would be only right to paint both her great kids in separate paintings. We wanted them to capture their personalities as well as their hobbies and pet dog that had passed away. Honestly I was more than nervous. For perfect likenesses I use my camera not my paint brush... my whimsical translation is not always realistic. I marched on and the paintings came . I had so much fun thinking of both the kids while I worked and prayed not only would my friend be satisfied but the kids (now entering teenager cool age) would be happy as well. I delivered both paintings last week and to my relief all was happy with my version of their gorgeous kids !
Robbin Robertson Polterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11707301214571302976noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817952574634830220.post-56051555516336287022011-04-05T05:01:00.000-07:002011-04-05T05:01:05.180-07:00Downtown scenes keep coming

This is my 5th or 6th time to paint downtown Austin. I grew up in Dallas and downtown was not particularly a friendly place to go and I ran the streets of Dallas high and low with no hesitation....I love downtown Austin and people love using Town Lake or now called "Lady Bird" lake ! The buildings are fun, the capital we watched give a facelift too. In this version of "Springtime in Austin" I included my 78 Chevy pick up pulling our boat, "Leslie" in his thong, vespas, Emergency helicopters, Cars to Go, moms pulling kids in those space ship pods, VW , unicycles, Seg Ways, fisherman, both my dogs, David cycling, Ezra running, Delta (used to work for and still in my gypsy blood), Moon Towers and the bats, hot air balloons, skate boarders, cyclists, folks and their dogs and me painting the painting ! My next piece will be of the lake and I will include my daughter working her magic ! Very fun to live in this town and enjoy all it has to offer !
Robbin Robertson Polterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11707301214571302976noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817952574634830220.post-84491451551625996202011-03-27T06:30:00.000-07:002011-03-27T06:30:10.363-07:00Annual Spring Art Show & Gift Sale

We are gearing up now for our Spring show in a few weeks. Spring is the most beautiful time of year in Austin and this is a great opportunity to show fresh art and gifts for Mothers Day. Our family had a fabulous Spring Break in Akumal Mexico in Azul Riviera house owned by Kathy Sonheim. A Beautiful home to bring lots of friends and family together. The trip was a great rest before the Spring flurry of activities. This years show will be Saturday April 16th from 11-7pm at my house 4401 Sinclair Ave. Austin Texas 78756 (backyard patio). Artists participating are: myself, Donna Weaver, Edie Kemp, Melanie Johnston, Jim Robinson, Kelly Hill, Emma Genet , Sarah St Laurent and full massage by Rowena Valentine. We hope you can make it by and bring a dozen friends too !Robbin Robertson Polterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11707301214571302976noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817952574634830220.post-11152132974418379662011-01-15T18:47:00.000-08:002011-01-15T18:47:57.219-08:002011...new directions ?I think it is natural that the new year brings new goals, new directions and this is great for artists . The new year brings an inspiration of a new start . I was in 9 art shows last year. That may not be so many for so many professional artists but with a part time job and mother of 2 it was allot and by December I was exhausted. The economy has hit artists square on and most the time the prices of my art are at such a spread I can still sell art. This year I would still like to host a show or 2 and possibly participate in another show. I also hope to follow up on commissions that have been floating around for years. I started this year with my 3rd version of an Austin cityscape. It is a fun painting to work on and changes every time. This version Downtown III includes the lovely woman that commissioned it and her 2 fabulous poodles. I hope to lock myself up and paint more this year and I look forward to new inspirations this year.Robbin Robertson Polterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11707301214571302976noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817952574634830220.post-75104562437417077332010-12-11T06:26:00.000-08:002010-12-11T06:26:51.250-08:00Holiday Art Show Re-Cap...best show

I have the say this was my favorite Holiday Art Show so far,,,after over 10 years of hosting the show I learn every year a bit more. I was cursing the show 2 days before because I am slammed with yard work to prepare my yard for the influx of artists, electrical needs and clearing out furniture and plants. The weather was beautiful both days. Friday was slow and Saturday rocking and rolling. We had several new artists : Kelley Hill and Gery Henderson-both amazing pottery artists, Melanie Johnston-fine jeweler, Emma Genet applying Henna tattoos and festive earrings , Jim Robinson and Katherine Klise Johnston! Edie Kemp was able to make the show after all and her beautiful mola pieces, Ginny Burnett and her gorgeous knitted creations, Ziya Neema and her Afro Caribbean pieces hanging from the trees , Katherine Klise's beautifully pregnant and lovely paintings and tiny intricate snowmen , Donna Weaver and her religious inspired mosaics, Jim Robinson and his Austin digitally enhanced photographs and Rowena and her massage table set up inside. Anyway I had so much fun and I think the artists did too !Robbin Robertson Polterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11707301214571302976noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817952574634830220.post-29968628000666901822010-11-04T19:09:00.000-07:002010-11-04T19:13:34.825-07:00Holiday Art Show & Gift Sale !
2010 Annual Holiday Art Show & Gift Sale

Friday Dec. 3rd & Saturday Dec.4th 11am-7pm

Participating Artists

Robbin Polter Folk art inspired originals & prints

Each family member is symbolized by an animal and those are represented on the panels. The first was an "Otter" and "Sea Anenome"on the tropical panel, a Panther and Monkey on the "Jungle Panel" and an Ox and Lakehouse on the Guadalupe River on the 3rd panel. I moved this project in my head for a month before beginning because there was so much to include. The 3D aspect is pieces I cut out of MDF and then raise it from the board. The 3D pieces are twice the work as a painting but I love the results. Commissions are a leap of faith hoping your customers appreciate and love the final product !Robbin Robertson Polterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11707301214571302976noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817952574634830220.post-64142939583660260022010-08-18T19:42:00.000-07:002010-08-18T20:01:28.388-07:00Process of Painting according to me !I am often asked how I come up with ideas, how I paint, do I draw paintings out? I suppose many of my paintings seem random in theme , a bit crazy and they are. I like what seems to be a traditional theme to have unique twists, a surprise , an imbalance really. I have ideas and think about them for quite some time. If play with colors in my head and if I have difficulty moving colors I swim and they all fall in place effortlessly. I don't sketch, I hate sketching and did not learn to really draw until after college. I don't like pencils, pastels, chalk . clay or anything that makes my hands feel dirty ! All artists are different, I embrace those differences and I am happy to admit it is odd. I am certain if I liked to draw my art would look different, and I am satisfied that they are not sophisticated but raw & always fun. I find the frame I want first, cut my board to fit. Next a basic sketch and get to work. I love painting outside unless it is Summer in Texas and 104F. I move into my dining room and take over. My family is at times patience of the art supplies taking over our house . I love the last layers of paintings. layers and layers and then I add one more than I should . I used to believe in the less is better but since I turned 40 another 5 layers are better. I varnish my pieces. the colors pop, put the back on and begin day dreaming about the next piece !Robbin Robertson Polterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11707301214571302976noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817952574634830220.post-71221491610024758942010-08-16T14:03:00.000-07:002010-08-16T14:06:22.279-07:00Hyde Park Bar & Grill Central on Duval ART SHOW !
This is our postcard for our show !

www.robbinrobertsonstudios.com & www.ziyaneema.com

Robbin Robertson Polterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11707301214571302976noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817952574634830220.post-52788903498783698802010-08-15T16:41:00.000-07:002010-08-15T17:03:01.972-07:00Art Show Sept 3rd Hyde Park Bar & Grill Central on Duval Austin ,TexasLast week Terrell Powell & I had our closing reception for " Wit & Whimsy in Contemporary Art" at the JCC Austin. It was a quiet evening but really nice discussions with new guests, family & friends. The show comes down 8/17 & I am quickly switching creative gears for my show with Ziya Neema hanging 9/3. This exhibit will be hosted by Hyde Park Bar & Grill Central on Duval in Austin. My favorite restaurant in town and a beautiful backdrop for artwork. Ziya has completed many show stopping pieces for the show and I am working like Van Gogh on caffeine to catch up to her ! The reception will be 9/8 430pm-630pm, free & open to the public. It is a great excuse to stay for dinner ! Both Ziya & I have around 20 pieces each so it will be a colorful & exciting show !Robbin Robertson Polterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11707301214571302976noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817952574634830220.post-6574739002407128772010-06-14T11:23:00.001-07:002010-06-14T11:27:18.184-07:00Sneak Peek and 2 shows on the horizon !I am stretching time this summer preparing for 2 shows on the horizon. My show at the Jewish Community Center in Austin hanging July 6th and Hyde Park Bar and Grill in September. My family is mostly patient with my art spreading out over our dining table, paints, shop lights, work towels, extra frames and tubs of paint within my reach. I like painting in the middle of the action since I am interrupted dozens of times for misc. reasons. I feel honored to be in Terry's company and look forward to the opportunity. I will add photos of pieces soon for a sneak preview of that show. Once hanging I will begin work on my show with Ziya Neema at Hyde Park Bar and Grill on Duval St. Austin Texas. This show will hang Sept Labor Day weekend for 5 weeks. It was a busy stroll of friends, family, neighbors and collectors stopping by to pay homage to their favorite artists. My family works for weeks to get our yard ready for the event and I could not do it without their efforts and patience. Ziya's enormous hand painted sails hung from the trees, the deck and brought the event to a higher level of glory. It was fun showing with her after all these years of having our work hang together in the Caribbean galleries. Donna brought her beautiful Saints, Virgins, retablos, mosaic crosses and Dallas doggie treats to sell. Rowena brought her hand knitted recycled purses and her chair massage for our weary guests. Ginny Burnett knitted lightly weighted shawls and scarves. Beth "Our Lady of the Lunch" also brought her casseroles to tasted and sell, her silver jewelry and folk art from Mexico. Luis Abreux & Cuban Dog Studio was set up on our deck with his lovely girlfriend Julie and Cuban mama ! Thank you to all our friends that stopped by we had a great Spring Day under Ziya's sails !Robbin Robertson Polterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11707301214571302976noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817952574634830220.post-88080678927093300832010-03-11T15:50:00.000-08:002010-04-27T18:52:06.799-07:00Spring Show May 1st 11am-7pm mi casa !<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw-tMTWRc3bGYIPh-4k3iSNOtGmGA2xCyfCf_BaeKmyltgTMunaaMJxMl9a0io1y9ZxsMagYC_ua00FOPBCrEBGT767_tneahdwx5PuTz3h2NUQhFbxxFmctAdSGj8IkYgrsauCa3b6tQ/s400/IMG_8227.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447527923019906018" />
May 1st will be my first Spring Show at my house. This was one week after the Saints won the Super Bowl so to say "magic was in the air" is a monumental understatement. I love Mardis Gras....and yes I hate crowds and yes it can get crazy but it is simply fantastic. The parades are beautiful and every minute the Crews put into the floats shine. I love the music, the happiness, the colors. the beads, masks and the excitement. I never saw anyone out of control or miserable. I did almost kill myself with a "Voodoo Punch" but it was all self induced. Anyway it is artistically inspirational. Wow.
